For the Love of It…

I am in love with hunting. I am in love with its features, its challenges, and its rewards. I am in love with its history and its hope-filled promise of a better tomorrow. I love it for what it is, for what I make it, and for what it has made me.

I harbor deep emotion for my evolution as a hunter. Once a boy who only sought to kill, now a man learning to be a steward of the land. On any given day afield, I find myself somewhere in between the two, still trying to find my place in it all.

I love the complexity that hunting offers. That constant question of morality when life is taken. I understand the value of what has been done and carry the weight home with me each night. I know what it means to bring something to its final breath, break down its parts and use them for my own.

I love the stories that each game meal tells. The aromas all have their own memory. I love sharing the nourishment with family members and seeing the labors, time well spent.

  1. Anthony Bourdain filmed a show with hunters recently; pheasant, I believe. They discussed that very notion of respecting life, and the sadness that does come with having taken an animal ‘s life—-that would make a person be appreciative, respect, and not wasteful. It is good to live lose to the land. I appreciate your thoughts.
